The Resurrection
The next evening, when the Sabbath ended, Mary Magdalene and Salome and Mary the mother of James went out and purchased burial spices to put on Jesus’ body (Mark 16:1 NLT).
In Jewish time keeping the end of the present day (& the beginning of the next) is at 6pm. This is why the Mary’s & Salome were able to go out (after 6pm) & buy spices, because at that time the Sabbath had ended, & the next day (Easter Sunday) was beginning.

In the upper right foreground you can see garlic bulbs hanging up, whilst on the upper left are red peppers, with lemons behind them. Various baskets of herbs & spices are included on the stall. The lower centre foreground has a basket of dates in it, with almond nuts to the right, & a basket of Pistachio buts behind that.

Very early on Sunday morning, [1] just at sunrise, they came to the tomb. On the way they were discussing who would roll the stone away from the entrance to the tomb. But when they arrived, they looked up and saw that the stone—a very large one—had already been rolled aside (Mark 16:2-4 NLT).

This scene illustrates the three named women (there may have been more present) hurrying to the tomb of Jesus. Mary Magdalene has looked up the pathway & noticed the stone rolled away from the tomb entrance & is pointing in amazement.

So they [the women] entered the tomb, and there on the right sat a young man clothed in a white robe. The women were startled, but the angel said, “Do not be so surprised. You are looking for Jesus, the Nazarene, who was crucified. He isn’t here! He has been raised from the dead! Look, this is where they laid his body. Now go and give this message to his disciples, including Peter: Jesus is going ahead of you to Galilee. You will see him there, just as he told you before he died!” (Mark 16:5-7 NLT).
Verse 2 states, “2 Very early on Sunday morning, just at sunrise, they [Mary Magdalene and Salome and Mary the mother of James] came to the tomb.” This scene is set just as the sun is rising. Pictured in the above scene are Mary Magdalene, Salome and Mary (wife of Cleopas – Joseph & James Little’s mother – sister of Mary (mother of Jesus)) and an angel.

The women [Mary Magdalene and Salome and Mary the mother of James] fled from the tomb, trembling and bewildered, saying nothing to anyone because they were too frightened to talk (Mark 16:8 NLT).
The most reliable early manuscripts of the Gospel of Mark end at verse 8. Other manuscripts include various endings to the Gospel. A few include both the “shorter ending” & the “longer ending”. The majority of manuscripts include the “longer ending” immediately after verse 8.

Then they [Mary Magdalene and Salome and Mary the mother of James] reported all these instructions briefly to Peter and his companions. Afterward Jesus himself sent them out from east to west with the sacred and unfailing message of salvation that gives eternal life. Amen (Mark 16:8 NLT).

It was early on Sunday morning when Jesus rose from the dead, and the first person who saw him was Mary Magdalene, the woman from whom he had cast out seven demons (Mark 16:9 NLT ) [Longer ending of Mark].
I suspect that the other women (Salome & Mary the mother of James the Less) may have been present at this time, since they were recorded as being with Mary Magdalene in March 16 verses 1-8. However, they are not specifically mentioned in verse 9, so I have decided to omit them.

She [Mary Magdalene] went to the disciples, who were grieving and weeping. But when she told them that Jesus was alive and she had seen him, they didn’t believe her (Mark 16:10-11 NLT) [Longer ending of Mark].
From left to right (back row): Mary Magdalene (with arm raised), Thomas/Didymus (aka Doubting Thomas), Simon/Peter, John (son of Zebedee), A serving woman carrying a tray of fruit, James (son of Zebedee), Andrew. From left to right (front row, backs of characters): Matthew/Levi, Bartholomew/Nathaniel, Simon the zealot.
In this scene we can see Mary Magdalene having just run into the upper room in which the disciples are staying. I have drawn her with an upraised arm, she is saying “Jesus has risen!”
No matter what the initial reaction of the disciples was (doubt, shock, etc) there were soon to learn the truth: that Jesus had indeed risen from the grave, just as he promised them he would. This is the most remarkable, amazing, life-affirming news that has ever happen on this earth. No wonder we celebrate Easter!
